XUV 7XO AX9 L Variant Leaks Ahead of Launch: A New Benchmark for Under Rs 32 Lakh?

XUV 7XO AX9 L Variant Leaks Ahead of Launch

Mahindra’s XUV 7XO is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious upgrades the Indian market has seen in years, and the latest leak around its AX9 L variant makes that clearer than ever. This isn’t just a facelift. It’s Mahindra signalling that the modern Indian family SUV, especially one under Rs 32 lakh, can be far more premium than what buyers are used to.

Why the AX9 L Leak Matters

Until now, AX7 L sat at the top of Mahindra’s lineup. The introduction of an AX9 L variant suggests a strategic shift: Mahindra wants a flagship trim that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with higher-priced rivals. For a brand that has consistently climbed the value ladder, this leaked variant shows the next phase of premium tech, premium comfort and a premium positioning.

A More Upscale Interior Than Expected

Spy shots reveal a dual-tone cream and brown cabin, leatherette upholstery and a more refined dashboard layout. The triple-screen setup instantly elevates the experience, giving the cabin a luxury-car feel. Features such as reclining second and third-row seats, rear sunshades and wireless charging point toward a customer base prioritising comfort over mere size.

This direction mirrors a broader trend in India: 7-seaters are no longer just family workhorses. Buyers want sophistication without losing practicality.

Powertrain Signals Mahindra’s Intent

The AX9 L test mule was spotted with the 2.2-litre diesel automatic—Mahindra’s strongest and smoothest combination. With 184 bhp and 450 Nm on tap, the powertrain choice hints that the top variant is meant to offer a premium, effortless drive. A manual option is unlikely, aligning the trim with global premium SUV standards.

Tech Features That Could Reshape Expectations

Mahindra is expected to load this trim with an AR head-up display, ventilated second-row seats, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system, a panoramic sunroof, a powered boss mode seat and Level 2+ ADAS. This tech stack pushes the XUV 7XO into a different bracket—one usually dominated by vehicles far above the Rs 30 lakh range.

What It Means for the Market

With a launch set for 5 January 2026, Mahindra is aiming to start the year with a statement. If priced between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 32 lakh (on-road), the XUV 7XO AX9 L could redefine what Indian buyers expect from a premium 7-seater. The segment’s competition—Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus—will be watching closely.
