Toyota is preparing to open 2026 with a model that may not be entirely its own, yet could become one of the brand’s most strategic launches in India. The upcoming Urban Cruiser Electric, essentially Toyota’s version of Maruti’s eVitara, isn’t just another badge-engineered product. It signals how Toyota plans to position itself in a market shifting toward affordable, practical EVs.

Why This Rebadged EV Matters

Toyota has been unusually quiet in India this year, but its 2026 roadmap looks very different. Unlike its hybrid-first approach, the brand now appears ready to enter the mainstream EV space with a model priced between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 24 lakh. This places it squarely in the most competitive EV bracket, where Indian buyers want long range without premium-car pricing.

By tying up with Maruti’s EV platform, Toyota gains a cost advantage. It can offer a credible electric SUV without the long development cycle and high investment that pure EV architectures demand.

Familiar Package, New Intent

The cabin will mirror the eVitara’s layout: multi-layer dashboard, twin floating displays and the new two-spoke steering wheel. Toyota’s version will carry subtle exterior changes, giving it its own identity while retaining the practicality-focused interior.

Feature highlights include a twin-screen setup, wireless charging, ventilated front seats, JBL audio, powered driver seat, sliding and reclining rear seats, and a sunroof. Level 2 ADAS and six airbags are expected to be standard, with seven airbags likely on higher trims.

This combination makes the SUV more than just a rebadge. It places Toyota on equal footing with rivals like Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6 and VinFast VF 7.

Range Will Decide Its Fate

Toyota will use Maruti’s 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery packs, with the top variant expected to cross 500 km on a single charge. If Toyota matches that claim with real-world efficiency, the model could attract early adopters shifting from petrol SUVs.
