Mahindra Hits 5.81 Lakh Sales In 2025, Moves Past Hyundai And Tata In A Historic Win

Mahindra Hits 5.81 Lakh Sales In

India’s car market has witnessed one of its most defining years yet. Mahindra, long seen as an SUV specialist with a loyal but niche base, has surged to the number two position in 2025, overtaking Hyundai and Tata. Posting 5.81 lakh units, Mahindra’s rise reflects a fundamental change in what Indian buyers now prioritise: presence, performance and modern electric capability.

This matters because the shift isn’t a short-term spike. It represents the first time a homegrown manufacturer focused largely on utility vehicles has surpassed mass-market rivals offering wider portfolios. Mahindra’s momentum began early in 2025, driven by the Scorpio-N, Scorpio Classic and Thar Roxx. But it was the brand’s aggressive entry into premium electric SUVs that provided the breakthrough.

The BE 6e and XEV 9e together crossed 38,000 units in 2025, validating Mahindra’s bold INGLO platform. Their strong demand showed that Indian buyers are now ready for well-equipped EVs that look and feel premium, not just efficient.

On the other hand, Hyundai and Tata faced different challenges. Hyundai slipped to fourth with 5.50 lakh units, held back by limited new launches. Tata posted 5.52 lakh units, boosted late in the year by Curvv and updated Nexon, but couldn’t match Mahindra’s double‑digit SUV growth.

Mahindra XEV 9S Launched at ₹19.95 Lakh

Looking ahead, Mahindra’s unveiling of the XEV 9S in November, with its three-screen dashboard and 59–79 kWh options, signals its intent to dominate the premium EV space in 2026. If this trajectory holds, India’s car market could be entering a new era where SUV-first brands set the pace for everyone else.
