Volkswagen Tayron R-Line Assembly Begins in India, Targets Kodiaq RS Rivalry

Tayron R Line

Volkswagen has commenced local assembly of the Tayron R-Line for the Indian market, marking the brand’s return to the three-row SUV space. The upcoming flagship SUV is being assembled at Volkswagen’s facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, and is expected to be officially launched in March 2026.

Local assembly and positioning

The Tayron R-Line will sit at the top of Volkswagen’s India lineup and expand the brand’s R-Line portfolio. It is positioned as a premium, performance-oriented three-row SUV and will compete directly with models such as the Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster and the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq RS. Volkswagen has been absent from this segment since the discontinuation of the Tiguan Allspace, making the Tayron a key product for the brand.

Platform, engine and drivetrain

Volkswagen Tayron R Line Confirmed for India

Built on the MQB EVO platform, the Tayron R-Line shares its underpinnings with the five-seat Tiguan R-Line but features a longer wheelbase of 2,789mm, extended by 109mm to accommodate a third row of seats. Power comes from the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 204hp and 320Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system.

Interior, features and safety

Despite its visual similarity to the Tiguan, the Tayron R-Line gets distinct lighting elements and a more spacious cabin layout. Expected features include ventilated front seats, a large 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting with multiple colour options. Safety equipment is likely to include seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, Level 2 ADAS and an electronic parking brake.

With an expected price of around Rs 50 lakh, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will serve as a halo product for the brand in India.
