This New Hybrid SUV Looks Like A Defender And Targets Prado

Geely is preparing to enter the serious off-road SUV segment with a new large plug-in hybrid model called the Battleship. The SUV is based on the Galaxy Cruiser concept that was first revealed in 2025.

Early teaser images show the near-production version undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden. With its boxy stance and rugged styling, the new Geely Battleship appears to target established off-road SUVs like the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest.

Geely Battleship Targets Large Off-Road SUV Segment

The Battleship will mark Geely’s first major attempt at the global off-road SUV market. The model is expected to rival traditional ladder-frame SUVs while also competing with newer Chinese electrified off-roaders.

Vehicles such as the Toyota Prado, Ford Everest and GWM Tank 500 are likely competitors. By entering this segment, Geely aims to expand its SUV portfolio beyond urban crossovers and family vehicles.

Rugged Design Inspired By Land Rover Defender

The Battleship’s design takes clear inspiration from the chunky proportions of the Land Rover Defender. It features a squared-off body shape with prominent wheel arches and thick lower cladding.

Other details include a floating roof design, side-hinged tailgate and an externally mounted spare wheel. The concept version also hinted at serious off-road ability with features such as up to 800 mm wading depth, four-wheel steering and tank-turn capability.

Hybrid Powertrain And Advanced Technology

Reports suggest the production Battleship will use a powerful plug-in hybrid drivetrain with three electric motors. Some sources indicate a 1.5-litre engine paired with a large battery pack, while others mention a 2.0-litre engine setup.

Combined output could range from around 640 kW to more than 1000 kW depending on the final configuration. The SUV is also expected to offer advanced driver assistance systems, potentially including a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.

The Geely Battleship is expected to debut in China in 2026 before expanding to other global markets.
