The Renault Duster is set to make its return to India tomorrow, marking the comeback of a nameplate that played a key role in shaping the midsize SUV segment. Discontinued in early 2022, the Duster’s third-generation avatar will also be Renault’s first India-bound launch under its International Game Plan 2027, signalling a renewed focus on the Indian market.

Renault Duster Exterior Design: Rugged but India-Specific

Globally, the third-generation Duster adopts a far more rugged and upright stance than before. It features squared-off proportions, muscular wheel arches and heavy body cladding, giving it a tougher SUV identity. The international model measures around 4.3 metres in length and sits on a longer wheelbase, pointing to improved cabin space.

Next Gen Duster Drops Camouflage in India

For India, Renault has already hinted at noticeable design changes. Official teasers suggest unique eyebrow-style LED DRLs up front and a connected LED tail-lamp bar at the rear. The front and rear bumpers are also expected to be specific to the India-spec Duster, helping it stand apart from the global version.

Renault Duster Interior and Features

Inside, the new Renault Duster is expected to move away from the basic cabin of the older model. The international version gets a modern, layered dashboard with sharp lines, a driver-focused centre console and hexagonal air vents, paired with either an all-black or dual-tone interior theme.

Feature expectations for India include a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital driver’s display, wireless charging and a 360-degree camera. Renault is also expected to introduce ADAS on the Duster, which would make it the brand’s first car in India to offer advanced driver assistance features.

Renault Duster Engine and Powertrain Options

Next Gen Duster

At launch, the new Renault Duster is expected to follow a petrol-only strategy. The likely mainstay will be the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 156hp, offered with both manual and CVT gearbox options. Entry-level variants could use the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine seen on the Kiger, possibly with revised tuning.

There are no plans to reintroduce a diesel engine at the moment. However, Renault India is evaluating a localised hybrid powertrain for the Duster, which could arrive at a later stage. While the older Duster offered AWD, a similar setup on the new model is considered unlikely for India due to cost constraints.

Renault Duster Platform and Localisation

The India-bound Duster is a third-generation model built on Renault-Nissan’s CMF-B platform. This architecture supports improved safety systems, updated electronics and a wider range of powertrain options. Renault is also working on localising the CMF-B platform for India to keep costs competitive.

This platform will also underpin Nissan’s upcoming midsize SUV for India, expected to launch in 2026, following the earlier Duster–Terrano strategy.

Renault Duster Expected Price and Rivals

Renault has not revealed pricing yet, but the new Duster is expected to be positioned between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. When it goes on sale, it will enter one of India’s most competitive segments.

Key rivals will include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder and upcoming models like the Tata Sierra and Tata Curvv.
