J.D. Power 2026 Owner Satisfaction Rankings: Porsche Leads Overall, Hyundai Tops Mainstream Brands
New-vehicle owners are happier than ever, according to the latest J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. Based on responses from nearly 80,000 owners after their first 90 days of ownership, the study shows overall customer satisfaction has improved for the third consecutive year.
Among all automakers, Porsche retained the highest overall score, while MINI emerged as the highest-ranked mainstream brand. Hyundai and Kia also secured strong positions, reflecting the narrowing gap between premium and mass-market manufacturers.
Porsche Leads Premium Brands, MINI Tops the Mainstream Segment
The J.D. Power APEAL Study measures how emotionally satisfying a new vehicle is to own and drive. Rather than focusing only on reliability, it evaluates more than 30 attributes, including driving performance, comfort, interior design, technology, storage solutions and ease of everyday use.
Porsche claimed the highest overall score with 896 points out of 1,000, marking another year at the top of the rankings. Land Rover finished second among premium brands with 886 points, while Cadillac followed closely at 885 points.
J.D. Power also noted that Tesla, Rivian and Jaguar would have ranked among the highest-scoring brands if they had met all eligibility requirements for the study.
In the mainstream category, MINI retained first place with a score of 875, ahead of Hyundai (858) and Kia (857). The results indicate that mainstream brands continue to close the gap with premium rivals by offering higher-quality interiors, more advanced features and improved ownership experiences.
Among individual vehicles, the BMW X6 and BMW 7 Series shared the highest overall score across all categories in this year’s study.
Better Interiors and EV Experience Lift Overall Owner Satisfaction

According to J.D. Power, improvements in vehicle interiors contributed the most to higher owner satisfaction in 2026. Respondents praised better storage spaces, more practical cupholders, improved smartphone placement and redesigned centre consoles that make everyday use more convenient.
Despite these gains, infotainment systems and vehicle setup continue to be common pain points for many new owners. Technology features that are difficult to configure or operate remain one of the biggest reasons for lower satisfaction scores.
Another major finding is the continued rise of battery-electric vehicles. The study found that EVs outperformed internal combustion engine vehicles in nearly every measured category while also recording the largest year-on-year improvement in owner satisfaction.
J.D. Power also highlighted that the gap between premium and mainstream brands continues to shrink as more affordable models adopt features and refinement that were once exclusive to luxury vehicles.
The latest APEAL Study suggests that today’s buyers value a combination of strong driving dynamics, intuitive technology and well-designed interiors. Automakers that successfully deliver all three continue to earn the highest satisfaction scores and stronger customer advocacy.
