Porsche Makes A Surprising Claim About Hybrid Cars

Porsche says many of its plug-in hybrid customers are actually driving their cars mostly in electric mode. The claim was made by the company’s Australian boss while speaking to media at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

According to the brand, hybrid technology is playing a key role in helping customers gradually transition from traditional petrol cars to fully electric vehicles.

Porsche Says Many PHEV Owners Drive Mostly Electric

Porsche says customer data from its E-Hybrid models shows that many drivers frequently use electric-only mode for daily driving. This suggests that plug-in hybrid vehicles are being used as intended, with owners regularly charging their cars and taking advantage of their electric capability.

This claim contrasts with comments from some other automakers that say many plug-in hybrid owners rarely plug in their vehicles. Porsche’s Cayenne E-Hybrid and Panamera E-Hybrid models can travel around 80–90 km on electric power depending on the variant.

No Plug-In Hybrid 911 Yet, But Hybrids Remain Important

Porsche says there are currently no plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the iconic 911 sports car. However, the latest 911 Turbo S uses the brand’s T-Hybrid technology, which combines a petrol engine with electric assistance to boost performance.

Looking ahead, Porsche is expected to expand its electrified lineup further. The company is also working on a new SUV that will be offered with both hybrid and combustion engine options, with a global debut expected before the end of the decade.
