Next-Gen Volkswagen Golf Mk9 Teased Ahead Of 2028 Debut
Volkswagen has offered the first glimpse of the upcoming ninth-generation Golf. The teaser image provides an early look at the future of the iconic hatchback as the brand prepares to carry the Golf nameplate into a new era of electrification.
The next-generation Volkswagen Golf Mk9 is expected to debut around 2028 and will continue to play a major role in the company’s global lineup. Despite the shift toward electric vehicles, Volkswagen plans to offer the new Golf with both internal combustion engine and battery-electric powertrains.
Golf Mk9 Teaser Revealed
The silhouette teaser was shared during a works council meeting by the German trade union IG Metall. While the image does not reveal many details, the outline confirms the familiar Golf hatchback shape that has defined the model for decades.
Volkswagen also confirmed that production of the upcoming Golf Mk9 will take place at its historic Wolfsburg plant in Germany. The current Golf Mk8 will continue alongside the new model for some time, with production expected to move to Mexico in 2027.
ICE And Electric Versions Planned
The next-generation Golf will be built on Volkswagen Group’s new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The electric version, which may be called the ID. Golf, is expected to feature an 800-volt electrical architecture and improved battery technology for faster charging and better range.
Meanwhile, the combustion-powered versions will be heavily updated versions of the current Golf Mk8. Together, the two powertrain options will allow Volkswagen to gradually transition the Golf into the EV era while continuing to serve traditional buyers.
More details about the Golf Mk9 are expected to emerge closer to its anticipated launch later this decade.
