Mahindra Cancels XUV 3XO EV Plans. Vision X Will Rewrite India’s EV Segment
Mahindra’s decision to scrap the XUV 3XO EV has surprised many potential buyers, especially those waiting for an affordable electric alternative to the Nexon EV. But the company’s move is less about abandoning a segment and more about creating a future-ready SUV line-up that doesn’t rely on ageing platforms.
Vision X: The SUV That Changes Mahindra’s Compact EV Strategy
Mahindra’s Vision X will fill the void left by the cancelled XUV 3XO EV. Unlike the 3XO, which sits on the SsangYong Tivoli-based platform, the Vision X is built on Mahindra’s NU_IQ architecture. This new platform is designed for both ICE and EV models, allowing the company to modernise its entire sub-four-metre range.

This shift marks a major upgrade for the segment. Instead of reworking an existing compact SUV into an EV, Mahindra is preparing a clean, future-oriented product with better proportions, improved safety potential, and more premium engineering.
Why the XUV 3XO EV Had No Future
The XUV 3XO EV would have been limited by the underlying chassis. Its SsangYong-derived platform wasn’t optimised for electric packaging, restricting battery size, range potential, and cabin space. Mahindra realised this would make the model uncompetitive against newer-gen rivals.
At a time when Tata is preparing a completely new Nexon EV update, Mahindra needed something more than an adaptation. The Vision X offers that opportunity.
Vision X Design: Cleaner, Sharper, More Modern

Mahindra showcased the Vision X at the Freedom_NU event. The concept revealed a cleaner design direction with smooth body panels, grounded stance, a long hood, subtle tapering roofline, and flush door handles. For India’s compact SUV space, which is crowded with boxy designs, the Vision X brings a more aerodynamic and evolved aesthetic.
Inside, the production EV is expected to focus heavily on comfort and space efficiency. Mahindra wants to position it directly against the Nexon EV, so a feature-rich interior, connected tech, and practical cabin packaging are almost guaranteed.
Why Mahindra Didn’t Use a Born-Electric Platform
Many expected Mahindra to build its next EVs on the INGLO skateboard, like the BE6 and XEV 9e. But the Vision X EV is not a born-electric SUV.
Mahindra’s engineers chose the NU_IQ platform because of a key insight: compact SUVs under 4.3 metres don’t need a rear motor or skateboard layout to deliver strong performance. A powerful front motor paired with a well-engineered body structure is enough to give the spirited driving feel Mahindra is known for.
The skateboard platform is reserved for larger SUVs above 4.7 metres, where dual motors, greater battery size, and RWD setups elevate performance. For the Vision X, a multi-energy platform allows Mahindra to build efficient ICE and EV variants while keeping costs in check.
What This Means for India’s EV Buyers
For Indian customers, this strategy shift means a more purposeful and polished compact EV. Instead of launching a midway product, Mahindra is choosing long-term competitiveness.
The Vision X EV is likely to deliver:
- Better range thanks to smarter battery packaging
- More interior space than the 3XO-based EV could offer
- A stronger feature list to go head-to-head with Nexon EV’s next generation
