The move marks a significant expansion in the company’s luxury vehicle production capabilities in India and is expected to ease capacity pressures at existing plants.

The Panapakkam facility near Chennai was announced in 2024, with substantial investment directed toward infrastructure and production readiness. Initially, the plant will focus on assembling completely knocked down kits rather than full manufacturing. JLR models currently assembled at Tata’s Pune facility include several Land Rover vehicles, and some of these could gradually shift to Chennai depending on demand and capacity planning.

Industry speculation suggests the Range Rover Evoque could be among the first models assembled at the new location, although the company has not officially confirmed specific vehicles yet.

Capacity, exports and future potential

The Chennai plant is expected to have an annual capacity of up to 2.5 lakh units at full scale and could create thousands of jobs over time. While domestic luxury car demand alone may not utilise this entire capacity, the facility offers scope for export-oriented production in the future.

With Jaguar transitioning away from internal combustion vehicles globally, Land Rover continues to drive volumes. Expanded local assembly could improve competitiveness, pricing flexibility and overall market presence in India.
