Harley-Davidson Bikes May Get Cheaper In India After New India-US Trade Deal

The recently announced India-US trade deal is expected to bring noticeable changes to the premium motorcycle segment in India. One of the biggest beneficiaries appears to be Harley-Davidson, as several imported models could soon become more affordable. Here’s what the latest development means for Indian buyers.

Harley-Davidson Bikes To Become Cheaper In India

Under the new trade framework, Harley-Davidson motorcycles between roughly 800cc and 1600cc may enter India without import duties. This could significantly reduce prices and improve accessibility for enthusiasts.

A formal agreement is expected in the coming months, after which price revisions may follow. Popular imported models like the Nightster, Sportster S, Street Bob, Fat Boy and touring motorcycles could see the biggest impact.

However, locally developed models such as the Harley-Davidson X440 range will remain unaffected as they are already produced through a partnership with Hero MotoCorp.

Impact On India’s Premium Motorcycle Market

Lower prices for imported Harley-Davidson motorcycles could expand the premium bike buyer base in India. More competitive pricing may also intensify rivalry in the middleweight and large-capacity motorcycle segment.

Other American motorcycle brands could potentially benefit too, although detailed policy implications are still emerging. Overall, the move may make premium bikes slightly more attainable for Indian buyers.

EV Segment Not Included In Trade Deal

Interestingly, electric motorcycles have not been included in the current trade agreement. This is seen as a step to protect India’s growing domestic EV manufacturing ecosystem.

Government incentives under schemes like production-linked incentives continue to support local EV brands. While global electric motorcycle companies are exploring India, immediate duty benefits are not expected under this deal.
