BYD Considers Canada EV Factory, Possible Automaker Acquisition

BYD is studying the feasibility of establishing a new electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Canada as part of its expanding global strategy. The Chinese automaker is also open to acquiring an existing legacy car manufacturer if the opportunity strengthens its international competitiveness.

Canada EV Factory Under Evaluation

According to company executives, BYD prefers building wholly owned factories instead of joint ventures to maintain operational control and efficiency. Canada has recently allowed exemptions for up to 49,000 Chinese‑made electric vehicles annually despite tariffs introduced in 2024, creating a potential opportunity for manufacturers exploring local production.

If approved, the project could become one of the first wholly owned Chinese EV manufacturing facilities in North America.

Possible Legacy Automaker Acquisition

BYD¹ has also indicated that it is open to acquiring an established automaker, although no negotiations or specific targets have been confirmed. Such a move could help the company accelerate its expansion in global markets.

Industry observers point to past examples such as Geely’s acquisition of Volvo as evidence that Chinese automakers may use acquisitions to gain technology, brand value and manufacturing capacity.

Global Expansion Strategy

The company continues to pursue aggressive international growth. BYD aims to reach around 1.3 million overseas vehicle sales by 2026 while expanding manufacturing capacity in markets such as Hungary and Turkey.

BYD is also strengthening its technology stack through vertical integration, including in‑house Blade Battery production and new fast‑charging systems. These initiatives are intended to improve competitiveness as the global EV market continues to evolve.
