4 Million GM Cars Get AI Upgrade With Google Gemini
Artificial intelligence(AI) is now entering everyday cars, and General Motors has made a big move in that direction. The company is rolling out Google’s Gemini AI to 4 million vehicles.
This update brings a more natural voice experience, making in-car interactions feel closer to talking to a real assistant, unlike the car assistance we used to see.
GM Rolls Out Gemini AI to 4 Million Cars
General Motors has started rolling out Google Gemini AI to around 4 million vehicles in the United States.
The update is available for model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models equipped with Google built-in systems.
It will be delivered over the air in phases, so users won’t need to visit a dealership. The system builds on GM’s connected car platform powered by OnStar.
This upgrade replaces the older Google Assistant setup with a more advanced and conversational AI experience.
What Google Gemini AI Can Do Inside the Car
The biggest change is how drivers interact with the system. Instead of fixed commands, users can speak naturally and continue conversations.
For example, you can ask for directions and then add a coffee stop or search for restaurants without starting over. The system can also suggest music based on your mood, summarise podcasts, and help send or edit messages using voice.
Gemini supports back-and-forth interaction, making it easier to refine requests while driving. GM says this could also help commercial users with route planning, fuel stops, and finding suitable parking.
The company is also working on a more advanced, custom-built AI assistant expected later in 2026, with deeper integration into vehicle systems. For now, this update shows how AI is quickly becoming a core part of modern connected cars.
