Renault is preparing for a major comeback in India, and the third-generation Duster is set to play a central role in that strategy. Alongside familiar turbo-petrol engines, Renault has confirmed that the new Duster will receive a strong-hybrid powertrain by Diwali 2026. With this move, the Duster will enter a growing space currently occupied by models like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Victoris.

Renault Duster Strong-Hybrid Powertrain Explained

The strong-hybrid Duster uses a 1,789cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors. One motor functions as a generator, while the other drives the wheels. The combined system output stands at 154.2PS and 172Nm, supported by a relatively large 1.4kWh battery pack.

Renault’s E-Tech hybrid system works differently from Toyota’s full-hybrid setup. Instead of an e-CVT, the Duster uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox with fixed gear ratios. This allows the system to switch between electric drive, engine drive, or a combination of both, resulting in a more conventional driving feel with noticeable gear shifts. The larger battery also allows for extended low-speed electric running, contributing to improved efficiency in urban conditions.

Other Engine Options and Positioning

The strong-hybrid option is expected to compensate for the absence of a diesel engine on the new Duster. However, hybrid technology comes at a premium, which is why Renault will also offer more affordable turbo-petrol options.

These include a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 100PS, paired with either a manual or CVT gearbox, and a more powerful 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine delivering 163PS and 280Nm, mated to a 6-speed DCT. Together, this line-up allows the 2026 Renault Duster to cater to both efficiency-focused buyers and those seeking stronger performance.
