Jaipur Police Seize Over 140 Mahindra Thar And Scorpio SUVs For Illegal Window Tints

Jaipur has always had a strong craze for Mahindra Thar and Scorpio SUVs, especially in their full blacked-out avatar. But this popular style has now triggered strict police action. In a three-day crackdown, Jaipur Police seized more than 141 vehicles for illegal modifications including dark window tints, loud exhausts, and stickers.

Major Crackdown Across the City

The action took place from November 29 to December 1. Video footage shared online showed police removing black films from windshields, peeling stickers, and taking custody of modified vehicles.

A lineup of seized models included:

  • Over 20 Mahindra Thars
  • 15+ Mahindra Scorpio Classics
  • Multiple Royal Enfield bikes
  • KTM RC and other modified motorcycles
  • A few Hyundai Cretas and sedans

Police said that many of these vehicles were linked to smuggling, chain-snatching, robbery, and other crimes, prompting a wider enforcement push.

Vehicles Seized Under Motor Vehicles Act

Authorities confirmed that 100 four-wheelers and 41 two-wheelers were seized under the Motor Vehicles Act. Additional officers, including the DCP (South) Rajashri Raj Varma and Additional DCP Lalit Sharm, supervised the operation.

The focus was to curb law violations and discourage the growing trend of blackout modifications.

Are Window Tints Really Illegal in India?

As per the Supreme Court ruling in 2012 and Rule 100(2) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989:

Are Window Tints Illegal in India?
According to Rule 100(2) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules and the 2012 Supreme Court ruling, any aftermarket film applied to windscreens or side windows is prohibited. Vehicle glass must meet factory-set Visible Light Transmission (VLT) norms — 70% VLT for front and rear glass and 50% VLT for side windows.

Even clear UV-protection films installed after delivery are not allowed. Violators can be fined up to ₹2,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act, and in repeated cases authorities can seize the vehicle. Only vehicles with Z or Z+ security clearance are exempt.
