Hero MotoCorp To Withdraw ‘AERA’ Trademark Applications Amid Matter Motor Dispute
Hero MotoCorp has agreed to stop using the ‘AERA’ mark following a trademark dispute with electric two-wheeler startup Matter Motor. The matter was heard in the Delhi High Court, where Hero undertook to cease use of the name and to withdraw related trademark applications. However, this is not a final judgment and the case will continue.
Hero MotoCorp To Stop Using AERA Mark
During the hearing, Hero informed the court that it had already stopped using the AERA name earlier this year and that no new motorcycles have been produced with the mark since then. The company also confirmed it will withdraw multiple trademark applications linked to AERA-Tech and similar branding.
Hero clarified that AERA-Tech was used only as a technology acronym meaning Advanced Electric Ride Assist. It said the branding was never intended as a motorcycle model name and its bikes continued to carry the main Hero and Glamour badges.
Trademark Dispute With Matter Motor
Matter Motor had alleged trademark infringement and unfair trade practices, claiming similarity with its electric motorcycle brand Aera. The startup sought legal restraint on Hero’s use of related marks.
What Happens Next
The court has recorded Hero’s undertaking but the dispute is still ongoing. Further proceedings are scheduled in the coming weeks. The case highlights how trademark protection is becoming increasingly important as India’s electric two-wheeler market grows rapidly.
