Chinese EV Giant BYD Wants To Challenge Ferrari And McLaren In F1

BYD is reportedly exploring the possibility of entering Formula 1 in the future as it looks to strengthen its global brand recognition. According to reports, the Chinese electric vehicle giant could join the championship to compete with established teams such as Ferrari and McLaren.

The move would align with BYD’s broader global expansion strategy as the company continues to grow its presence in international markets. The automaker stopped producing internal combustion-only vehicles in 2022 and now focuses entirely on battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

BYD Exploring Entry Into Formula 1

Reports suggest that BYD could enter the sport either by forming a new team or by acquiring an existing outfit. One possibility mentioned is the Renault-owned Alpine team, although no official confirmation has been made so far.

Formula 1’s new 2026 power unit regulations significantly increase the role of electric power. The updated hybrid systems will deliver a much larger contribution from electric motors, making the sport more aligned with advanced EV technology.

Technology And Motorsport Ambitions

BYD could potentially use technologies developed for its premium Yangwang brand. One example is the Yangwang U9 hypercar, which uses four electric motors and delivers extreme performance.

Apart from Formula 1, BYD is also reportedly evaluating participation in other motorsport categories such as the World Endurance Championship as it continues to expand its presence in the global automotive industry.
