Volkswagen ID.4: VW’s First Electric SUV Confirmed for India in 2025

Volkswagen is set to electrify the Indian automotive landscape with the highly anticipated launch of the ID.4, its first all-electric SUV in the country. The German automaker has officially confirmed that the ID.4 will hit Indian roads in the fourth quarter of 2024, marking a significant milestone in its electrification journey.
Volkswagen’s Strategy for the Indian Market
Unlike some competitors that have opted for local assembly, Volkswagen will introduce the ID.4 as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). This move allows the company to gauge market response before committing to large-scale production.

The introduction of the ID.4 is the first step for us towards electrification. It clearly shows that we are committed to electric mobility in India.

With import duties in place, pricing is expected to be around ₹45 lakh, making it a luxury offering compared to locally assembled rivals like the BYD Atto 3, which falls in the ₹25-30 lakh range.
Volkswagen’s Long-Term EV Vision for India
The ID.4 launch is just the beginning. Volkswagen has outlined a broader EV strategy that includes:
- Localized, affordable EVs by 2026-27: The company aims to establish local manufacturing to compete in the mass market.
- Strategic partnerships: Volkswagen is exploring alliances with Indian manufacturers, with Mahindra being a potential partner.
- Market timing: Volkswagen expects EV adoption in India to gain critical mass around 2026-27, making it the right time to scale up operations.

Conclusion: A Major Step for Volkswagen in India
The ID.4’s entry into India signals Volkswagen’s commitment to electric mobility, even if premium pricing limits initial sales volumes. By introducing the ID.4 first, VW aims to establish itself as a serious player in the Indian EV space before launching more affordable, locally manufactured electric vehicles in the coming years.
As India moves toward a more electrified future, Volkswagen’s foray into the premium EV segment is an exciting development for consumers and the industry alike. Whether the ID.4 can carve out a strong niche among luxury EV buyers remains to be seen, but its arrival is a positive step towards a greener, more sustainable automotive market in India.
