Upcoming Tata Nexon Rival from Honda: New Compact SUV in the Works

Upcoming Tata Nexon Rival from Honda New Compact SUV in the Works

Honda is making a serious comeback in the compact SUV space. After years of focusing on sedans and the Elevate, the Japanese carmaker is now developing an all-new sub-4 meter SUV to take on segment leaders like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Maruti Brezza. This new model will mark Honda’s re-entry into one of India’s most competitive and fast-growing car segments.

Honda’s Comeback Plan

Currently, Honda has only one sub-4 meter product in India, the Amaze sedan. With compact SUVs accounting for a large chunk of India’s car sales, Honda’s absence from this category has been a noticeable gap. The company has now confirmed that it plans to introduce 10 new models by the end of the decade, including seven SUVs. Among these, a new small SUV for India is already under development, designed to bring Honda back into the mainstream volume game.

Platform and Powertrain

The upcoming Honda compact SUV is expected to be built on the Amaze platform or the all-new PF2 modular platform, which is being developed for future hybrid and global models. This architecture could allow Honda to offer both petrol and strong-hybrid powertrains. The SUV may use a version of the brand’s 1.2-litre petrol engine to stay under the sub-4 meter tax bracket, while a 1.5-litre hybrid setup could follow later. This would align Honda with India’s growing preference for fuel-efficient and eco-friendly SUVs.

Expected Design and Features

Honda’s global design language suggests a clean, sharp look with strong proportions and SUV-like presence. The compact SUV could borrow styling cues from the WR-V sold in Asian markets, but with significant changes for Indian buyers. Inside, it’s expected to offer a premium cabin with a large touchscreen, connected car tech, wireless charging, and possibly Level 2 ADAS features to match its rivals.

Competition Landscape

The new Honda compact SUV will face tough competition from established names like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet, and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Each of these models already dominates the market with unique strengths, from performance to technology. However, Honda could carve a niche with its trademark refinement, hybrid efficiency, and solid build quality. The SUV will play a crucial role in restoring Honda’s market share in India.

Launch Timeline and Outlook

Honda is expected to unveil its compact SUV by mid-2026, with production likely at its Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. This SUV will sit below the Elevate in Honda’s lineup and target buyers looking for a mix of practicality, efficiency, and premium feel in a compact footprint. With the upcoming Tata Nexon rival, Honda is signalling that it’s ready to fight back in the country’s most dynamic segment. If executed right, this SUV could become the model that finally brings Honda back into the heart of India’s car market.
