Skoda’s massive comeback march 2025 car brand rankings

Maruti Retains the Crown, But Margins Shrink

India’s passenger vehicle market closed March 2025 with 3,85,842 units dispatched, marking a 4.5% year-on-year growth. While the momentum stayed positive, the battle for the top spots is heating up — especially in the SUV segment.

Maruti Suzuki led once again, delivering 1,50,743 units, though it saw a slight 1.3% decline from March 2024. Its wide portfolio across Arena and Nexa dealerships continues to drive massive volumes, but the shrinking gap signals intensifying competition.

Hyundai and Tata Neck-and-Neck for Second

Hyundai claimed second place with 51,820 units, narrowly edging out Tata Motors, which sold 51,616 units. The margin? Just 204 cars. Despite Hyundai’s 2.2% dip, it maintained its spot — but Tata’s 3% growth shows a steady upward trend, powered by strong demand for the Nexon, Punch, and EVs.

Mahindra’s SUV-Heavy Strategy Pays Off

Mahindra held onto fourth position with 48,048 units, growing 18.3% year-on-year. SUVs like the Scorpio N, Thar, XUV3XO, and XUV700 continue to rake in numbers. However, Mahindra slipped from second to fourth compared to February, indicating slight monthly volatility.

Toyota & Kia Ride the Wave

Toyota surged ahead with 28,373 units, up 13%, thanks to its hybrid tech and rebadged Maruti models. Meanwhile, Kia clocked 25,507 units, recording a 19.2% jump, with the Seltos and Sonet leading the charge.

Skoda’s Comeback Steals the Spotlight

The surprise performer of the month? Skoda — skyrocketing 164.9% to 7,422 units. The Kylaq compact SUV seems to be a game-changer for the Czech brand, giving it much-needed momentum.

Rest of the Pack: Mixed Fortunes

  • Honda stayed steady with 7,228 units (+2.2%)
  • MG posted 5,501 units, up 18.4%
  • Volkswagen grew slightly with 3,538 units (+0.3%)
  • Renault dropped sharply to 2,846 units (-32.6%)
  • Nissan fell to 2,499 units (-7.5%)
  • Citroën declined 59.5% to just 407 units
  • Jeep continued to slide with 294 units (-30.8%)

Final Thoughts

While the top players continue to dominate, the shift in rankings — and the stunning rise of Skoda — proves how quickly the landscape can change. With SUVs still driving most of the volume and new launches on the horizon, April and the new financial year could bring more surprises.
