Toyota Hilux Goes Electric for the First Time!
Toyota has officially taken a bold step into the future with the reveal of the all-new ninth-generation Hilux. For the first time, this legendary off-roader will be available as a fully electric pickup. The global debut took place ahead of its production launch in December 2025, marking a major milestone for Toyota’s utility lineup.
Performance and Powertrain
The all-electric Hilux BEV retains its signature body-on-frame construction but now integrates modern electrification. It uses a 59.2 kWh battery pack mounted under the floor, delivering a real-world range of about 240 km per charge. Both front and rear e-axles power the truck, producing 205 Nm and 268 Nm of torque, respectively. Despite its new powertrain, the Hilux hasn’t lost its rugged spirit. It still boasts a 715 kg payload capacity and 1,600 kg of towing capability, supported by Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system for enhanced off-road control.
Hybrid Version
Alongside the BEV, Toyota also introduced a plug-in hybrid variant that combines the proven 2.8-litre diesel engine with a 48V hybrid system. This setup boosts both efficiency and torque while maintaining the Hilux’s workhorse DNA. The hybrid model can tow up to 3,500 kg and manage nearly 1,000 kg of payload, making it one of the most capable electrified pickups in its class.
Interior and Features

Inside, the new Hilux takes a big leap in technology and comfort. A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital cluster dominate the dashboard. Features like a blind spot monitor, driver attention system, and wireless charging bring it in line with Toyota’s latest global offerings.
India Launch Possibility
For Indian buyers, this reveal holds real promise. While Toyota has not confirmed launch plans for the electric or hybrid Hilux, the brand’s growing focus on hybrid technology in India hints at possibilities ahead. If the Hilux EV or PHEV does arrive, it could carve out a niche above the existing diesel-only model and strengthen Toyota’s green portfolio in the premium pickup space.
